Boy - I have some fond memories of this event! I'd lived in the UCLA dorms for two quarters, and known Chris, Matt, Fred and Carolyn for almost a year. I'd been playing my regular mix of rock; they'd been listening - a little too much - to one band: The Dead.

On June 4th, 1977, they dragged me to the Los Angeles Forum, where I caught my first Dead show. I was hooked.

Leaving the show, we discussed a Road Trip - to San Francisco and Winterland - where the dead were playing in a few days. It was "Dead Week" at ULCA, since finals are the next week, and this particular week is pretty quiet, and serious. Well - Dead Week took a special meaning for us as we crammed into someone's car and drove nine hours to San Francisco, for a Dead show.

Of course my roommate and I brought our books. Not just one or two, but all of them; I think that I had about twelve. I remember sitting on the sidewalk outside of Winterland waiting with hundreds of Dead Heads from all over for the doors to open. I don't remember touching a single book.
