The Keystones... That would be the Keystone Berkeley (University avenue, where Shattuck crosses) and the Keystone Palo Alto - I forget exactly where. Both are long gone, but Wow! -- these were special experiences! This was a time when the Dead were playing regularly in the bay Area -- so regularly that you could show up at a small local club and catch Jerry and friends... no lining up, no begging for tickets. I'm not sure which show or shows the photos below are from... but they're Keystones... I know because the lighting was pretty simple: red! And the tunes... some of my favorites: Loser; Deal; Dear Prudence. Great shows!
This photo's one of the only times I ever caught Keith Godchaux' face (For this shot, I probably held the camera over my head, so that I could "see"
over the keyboard). That's Donna, of course, with her husband. Keith would die in the next year -- a car accident -- but it seemed that he was living
hard, and that something was going to catch up with him sooner or later.... |
